VCK founder and MP Thol Thirumavalavan on Friday condemned the passage of the Motion of Thanks to the President’s Address in Parliament without a concluding speech by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, calling it a “murder of democracy” and a historic first in Indian parliamentary proceedings. The Dalit leader alleged that the ruling BJP deliberately created disruption to silence the Opposition and evade accountability.
Addressing reporters at Chennai airport, Thirumavalavan said the government orchestrated an atmosphere in which Opposition voices were blocked and the Leader of the Opposition was denied a platform, allowing the resolution to pass with only ruling party members’ support. He criticized this as a deliberate attempt to avoid scrutiny on sensitive domestic and international issues, including the Prime Minister’s relationship with US President Donald Trump.
“The government’s failure to allow the Prime Minister to address the House on the Motion of Thanks is a serious setback for parliamentary democracy. It reflects an evasion of responsibility on crucial matters,” Thirumavalavan added, emphasizing that this is unprecedented in India’s legislative history.

The VCK leader also launched a sharp attack on Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman for her recent remarks in Parliament, alleging that the BJP harbors an “anti-Tamil” sentiment. He cited her statement suggesting that the Tamil language is unsuitable even for begging as evidence of bias against the Tamil language, the state of Tamil Nadu, and its people.
Thirumavalavan praised Makkal Needhi Maiam founder and Rajya Sabha MP Kamal Haasan for his “befitting reply” to the minister’s comments in Tamil, describing Haasan’s response as a strong defense of the language and culture of Tamil Nadu. He said the BJP’s reaction to the speech showed frustration and disrespect toward regional representation in Parliament.
On the political front, Thirumavalavan highlighted that the VCK is actively preparing its election strategy. A high-level committee is reportedly finalizing the party’s manifesto, and plans for booth-level organisation, including the appointment of primary and secondary booth agents, are underway. When asked about actor-politician Vijay’s recent public appearance, he declined to comment.
