The Tata Group, one of India’s largest and most diversified business conglomerates, has built a vast portfolio spanning industries ranging from salt and automobiles to aviation, information technology and retail. The group’s holding company, Tata Sons, controls more than 30 businesses, while Tata Trusts, the philanthropic arm of the group, owns about 66 per cent of Tata Sons. The conglomerate’s businesses include globally recognised names such as Air India, Jaguar Land Rover, Tata Consultancy Services and consumer brands such as Zudio.
Aviation has become an important part of Tata’s expanding business portfolio. The group’s aviation operations are anchored by Air India, which returned to Tata ownership after being acquired from the Indian government. The group has continued to invest in the airline sector as part of its strategy to strengthen its presence in aviation. Alongside aviation, Tata’s automotive interests include Jaguar Land Rover, while its technology business is led by Tata Consultancy Services, one of India’s largest IT companies.
The group also has a significant presence in consumer-facing businesses. Tata operates across sectors including food and beverages, retail, electronics, hospitality and financial services. Its consumer portfolio includes established names such as Tata Salt, while its retail business has expanded rapidly through brands including Zudio. This diversification has allowed the Tata Group to maintain a presence across everyday consumer products as well as high-value industrial and technology sectors.

The group’s structure and governance have also remained closely linked to Tata Trusts, which hold a controlling stake in Tata Sons. The development comes amid reported tensions between the charitable trusts and the holding company over leadership and governance matters. N Chandrasekaran, who has served as Tata Sons chairman, was scheduled to remain in the position until February 2027. The evolving leadership situation has placed renewed attention on how one of India’s oldest business groups manages its extensive portfolio while balancing commercial interests with the philanthropic role of Tata Trusts.
