Bahujan Samaj Party chief Mayawati on Wednesday appealed to political parties and organisations to avoid what she described as “narrow politics” amid the ongoing controversy over the hijab. She said disputes involving religious practices should be handled at the local level instead of being turned into wider political issues. Her remarks came as the debate over the wearing of hijab continued to attract political attention.

Mayawati said the Constitution guarantees equal rights to citizens irrespective of their religion or community. Referring to the role of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar in framing the Constitution, she emphasised that the country's legal framework provides protection and equal treatment to people belonging to different sections of society. She said these constitutional principles should guide political and social discussions involving matters of faith and personal practices.

The former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister said issues surrounding religious customs should not become a reason for political confrontation. According to her, local authorities and communities should attempt to resolve such matters through dialogue and mutual understanding. She cautioned against using sensitive issues involving religion to widen political divisions, stressing the importance of maintaining peace and social harmony.

Mayawati also highlighted the ideological position of the BSP, describing it as an Ambedkarite political party committed to respecting different sections of society. She said the party stands for the protection of people's lives, property and religious rights. Her statement sought to underline the BSP's position that citizens from different religious and social backgrounds should be able to live with dignity and equal constitutional protection.

The BSP chief's comments come amid continuing political debates over the hijab and the rights of individuals to follow religious practices. Such disputes have frequently generated competing arguments over religious freedom, individual rights, institutional rules and public order. Mayawati's appeal focused on preventing these disagreements from becoming larger political confrontations and urged stakeholders to approach them at the local level.

Mayawati's remarks also reiterated the BSP's emphasis on constitutional equality and the protection of all communities. By asking political actors to avoid narrow political interests, she called for a more measured approach to the controversy. Her statement placed the issue within the broader framework of constitutional rights, religious freedom and social harmony, while urging those involved to resolve local disputes without allowing them to fuel wider tensions.
