The Karnataka government has clarified that no Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) corridor connecting Bengaluru with neighbouring cities has been approved or formally formulated so far, despite Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar seeking the Centre’s approval for such a network. The proposed connections had included Mysuru, Kanakapura, Tumakuru, Chickballapur and Kolar. The clarification was issued in response to a question raised in the Karnataka Legislative Council.
The government’s response indicates that the proposed RRTS network remains at the stage of discussion rather than an approved transport project. The clarification comes about two months after Mr. Shivakumar pushed for Centre-backed regional rail connectivity between Bengaluru and surrounding urban centres. The proposed system was intended to improve connectivity between the State capital and rapidly developing cities and towns in its wider metropolitan region.
According to the government, there are currently no approved RRTS corridors connecting Bengaluru with Mysuru, Tumakuru, Kolar or Chickballapur. The status means that no specific corridor among these proposed routes has received formal approval for implementation. The government’s response also makes clear that the proposals discussed publicly have not yet translated into officially sanctioned projects.

The proposed RRTS network has been discussed as a way to strengthen regional connectivity and provide faster alternatives for people travelling between Bengaluru and neighbouring cities. Such a system could potentially support daily commuters, reduce pressure on existing road networks and improve access to employment and economic opportunities across the region. However, detailed planning, route selection, feasibility assessments and approvals would be required before construction could begin.
The clarification was provided during the Legislative Council proceedings in response to a question raised on the status of RRTS corridors. Large and Medium Industries Minister M.B. Patil represented the government during the proceedings. The response provides a clearer picture of the current status of the proposals and indicates that the State has not yet reached the stage of formally approving or formulating the corridors mentioned in the discussions.
The development highlights the gap between the proposed regional transport vision and the current official status of the projects. While the State government has expressed interest in improving rapid connectivity between Bengaluru and neighbouring cities, the RRTS corridors remain without formal approval. Any movement towards implementation will depend on further planning and coordination between the Karnataka government and the Centre, followed by the necessary technical and administrative approvals.
