Union Home Minister Amit Shah brought several prominent southern leaders together at the 31st meeting of the Southern Zonal Council in Tamil Nadu on Thursday. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar and Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu were among the key leaders attending the meeting, highlighting the importance of coordination among southern states.
The Southern Zonal Council provides a platform for states in the region to discuss issues that require coordination between state governments and the Centre. The meeting brings together elected representatives and senior officials to consider matters involving development, administration, infrastructure and other areas where cooperation between neighbouring states can be important.
Shah, who is the Chairman of the Southern Zonal Council, presided over the meeting, while Vijay attended in his capacity as the council's Vice-Chairman. Their presence placed the Tamil Nadu chief minister in a central position during the discussions, particularly as the meeting brought together leaders from several politically different states.

The participation of Shivakumar and Naidu also added political significance to the gathering. Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are among the major states represented in the Southern Zonal Council, while Tamil Nadu is hosting the meeting. The presence of senior leaders from the three states provided an opportunity to discuss regional concerns and areas where governments can work together.
The meeting comes at a time when relations between the Centre and southern states remain an important political issue. Questions surrounding development, resource sharing, infrastructure and the implementation of central initiatives frequently require discussions between governments. A forum such as the Southern Zonal Council allows these matters to be raised collectively rather than being addressed only through individual state-level interactions.
The gathering of Shah, Vijay, Shivakumar and Naidu therefore carries significance beyond the formal council meeting. It brings together leaders with different political positions on a common administrative platform and creates an opportunity to focus on issues affecting the southern region. The discussions and decisions emerging from the meeting could provide a framework for greater coordination between the Centre and southern states on shared priorities.
