Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar on Tuesday warned Congress legislators threatening to resign over disappointment with the recent cabinet expansion, saying any resignation submitted would be accepted immediately. His remarks came a day after the induction of 19 new ministers triggered unrest among several party leaders who were left out of the reshuffle. The cabinet expansion, which had been awaited for a long time, took place on Monday and was expected to strengthen the Congress government's administrative structure.

However, the move quickly led to dissatisfaction within the party, with some senior leaders expressing disappointment over not receiving ministerial positions. The internal friction has emerged as a challenge for the state leadership, which is attempting to maintain unity within the ruling party. Senior Congress leader Yashvantharayagouda V Patil resigned as an MLA, while Belur Gopalakrishna also reportedly offered to step down after being excluded from the expanded cabinet, according to news agency ANI.

The developments intensified speculation of growing discontent among some legislators who had been expecting representation in the government. Reacting to the resignation threats, Shivakumar said political resignations were not unusual but emphasised that the Congress organisation remained central to the future of party leaders. "I have said whatever I have to... resignations keep happening in politics. No one can stop those resigning. If they want the party and their future, the party is important. If there is party, there is everything else," he said, according to news agency PTI.

The Karnataka chief minister further stated that if any legislator decided to submit a resignation, the process would be completed quickly. His comments were seen as a firm message to party members who have expressed dissatisfaction following the cabinet expansion. Shivakumar's warning also highlighted the leadership's attempt to discourage public protests and maintain discipline within the Congress ranks. The cabinet expansion was closely watched within Karnataka politics as the Congress government sought to balance regional representation, caste equations, and loyalty considerations while selecting ministers.

However, as is often the case with large-scale political appointments, those left out have raised concerns about recognition and opportunities within the administration. The latest developments pose an internal management challenge for the Congress government as it continues its tenure in Karnataka. While Shivakumar has sought to project confidence and unity, the dissatisfaction among some legislators will require political negotiations to prevent further unrest.
