Congress Leader Jairam Ramesh took a sharp dig at the Modi government on Saturday, highlighting an apparent contradiction between RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent call for Indian couples to have three children and restrictive policies in BJP-ruled states. In a post on X, Ramesh pointed out that while Bhagwat advocates for a “Hum Do Hamare Teen” approach, several BJP-governed states penalize families with more than two children, questioning whether the Modi government’s own “Hum Do Hamare Do” policy applies only to itself.
Ramesh noted that in Gujarat, individuals with more than two children are disqualified from contesting local body elections, such as panchayats, municipalities, and municipal corporations. In Assam, those with more than two children are ineligible for state government jobs. Similarly, Uttarakhand bars such individuals from participating in panchayat elections.
“But now RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, who turns 75 in five days, has urged every Indian couple to adopt ‘Hum Do Hamare Teen.’ Will ‘Hum Do Hamare Do’ apply only to the Modi government?” Ramesh quipped, referencing his past accusations that the Modi administration’s policies favor a select few industrialists, dubbing it a “Hum Do Hamare Do” approach.
The Congress leader’s remarks come in the context of Bhagwat’s statement on August 28, 2025, where he emphasized the need for higher fertility rates among Hindus, sparking widespread discussion. Ramesh’s critique underscores a perceived hypocrisy, as BJP-ruled states enforce population control measures while the RSS, the ideological mentor of the BJP, appears to advocate for larger families. This contradiction has fueled political debates, with opposition parties seizing the opportunity to question the consistency of the ruling party’s policies.

Ramesh’s comments also revive his earlier criticisms of the Modi government, where he alleged that economic policies disproportionately benefit a small group of industrialists, likening it to a “Hum Do Hamare Do” framework that drains wealth from ordinary citizens. The Congress leader’s latest jab suggests a disconnect between the RSS’s ideological stance and the practical governance of BJP-led states, raising questions about the alignment within the Sangh Parivar.
As Bhagwat’s 75th birthday approaches on September 11, 2025, alongside Prime Minister Modi’s on September 17, the political spotlight remains on their leadership dynamics and the broader implications for India’s policy landscape.
