A political storm has erupted in Tripura after Tipra Motha Party (TMP) legislator Philip Kumar Reang accused Pathik Dev Varma, son of Telangana Governor and former Tripura Deputy Chief Minister Jishnu Dev Varma, along with three others, of threatening to kill him and his family inside the MLA Hostel in Agartala. The incident, which occurred on Monday night in the Khejur Bagan area, has raised serious concerns about security and law enforcement, prompting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to assert that “the law will take its course” to ensure justice.
Reang, a Kanchanpur MLA, filed a police complaint at the New Capital Complex police station, alleging that Pathik and three unidentified individuals confronted him during a private family discussion at the hostel. According to Reang, the group became aggressive when asked to leave, hurling abusive language and threatening to “slit his throat.” He further claimed they boasted of mobilizing 400 to 500 BJP workers to kill him and his family, an act he described as part of a “deep-rooted conspiracy.” Fearing for his safety, Reang took shelter in a fellow TMP legislator’s quarters. The accused, including Pathik, surrendered to the police on Tuesday night and were granted bail, intensifying public scrutiny of the case.
State BJP president Rajib Bhattacharjee addressed the controversy, emphasizing the party’s commitment to maintaining law and order. “The BJP does not promote or support such acts. The law will ensure justice, as the government has zero tolerance for crime,” he told reporters. Following the incident, Director General of Police Anurag Dhankar, West Tripura SP Namit Pathak, and Deputy Speaker Ramprasad Paul visited the MLA Hostel to assess the situation and reassure Reang. Bhattacharjee also dismissed concerns about deteriorating law and order, citing the large turnout at recent Ganesh Puja celebrations as evidence of public confidence in safety.

The incident has sparked outrage from opposition leaders, with State Congress president Asish Kumar Saha slamming the government for failing to secure even the MLA Hostel. “If an MLA isn’t safe in a government facility, what about ordinary citizens? All accused must be arrested immediately,” Saha demanded. A TMP delegation, led by Minister of State Bishaketu Debbarma, met Chief Minister Manik Saha to press for enhanced security measures at the hostel, highlighting the vulnerability of legislators.
The controversy has also strained relations within Tripura’s ruling coalition, as TMP, a key BJP ally, has threatened to exit the alliance over unresolved issues, including a tripartite agreement to address tribal grievances. Jishnu Dev Varma, a prominent BJP leader and member of Tripura’s erstwhile royal family, has not publicly commented on the allegations against his son. As investigations continue, the incident has cast a spotlight on political tensions and security lapses in Tripura, with calls for swift action to restore trust and ensure accountability.
