An anti-immigrant protest in the United Kingdom took an unusual turn on Tuesday when demonstrators reportedly mistook members of Pakistan’s Under-19 cricket team for asylum seekers. The protesters gathered outside a hotel in Portsmouth, southern England, where the young Pakistani cricketers were staying. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions surrounding demonstrations against immigration in the area, with protesters having recently confronted authorities during an unrelated incident involving migrants arriving near the port city.

The Pakistan Under-19 team became caught up in the protest after demonstrators apparently believed the group staying at the hotel was made up of asylum seekers. The players were in England as part of their cricket commitments, but their presence at the hotel was reportedly misidentified by the protesters. The unusual mix-up highlighted the charged atmosphere surrounding the ongoing anti-immigration demonstrations, which have drawn attention across the country. The incident took place in Portsmouth just 48 hours after protesters disrupted the disembarkation of dozens of migrants near the port city.

That earlier demonstration reportedly led to clashes with police and was widely condemned.  Against that backdrop, the gathering outside the hotel reflected the continuing tensions surrounding immigration and asylum seekers in parts of the United Kingdom. The presence of the Pakistani cricket team at the location inadvertently brought the sporting group into an issue unrelated to their tour. The Under-19 players were not asylum seekers and were in the United Kingdom for cricket-related activities. Their mistaken identification by protesters resulted in an unusual situation outside the hotel, where the demonstrators had gathered believing they were confronting migrants.

The episode also drew attention because the visitors were members of an organised international sporting team representing Pakistan, rather than people seeking asylum in Britain. The incident comes as Pakistan has cricket teams competing in England at different levels. While the Under-19 players were staying in Portsmouth, Pakistan’s senior men’s team was also in the country for its ongoing Test series against England. The senior side was playing the third Test at Edgbaston in Birmingham, meaning Pakistani cricketers were present at multiple locations across England at the same time.

The Portsmouth episode has therefore created an unusual intersection between England’s ongoing cricket season and its increasingly contentious debate over immigration. For the Pakistani youngsters, the demonstration was unrelated to their sporting commitments, but their presence at the hotel led protesters to mistake them for the very group they were demonstrating against. The incident comes amid broader protests and confrontations over migration in the United Kingdom, adding an unexpected and bizarre episode to an already tense situation.
