Odisha’s political landscape is poised for a major shake-up as former Cuttack MLA Mohammed Moquim, recently expelled from the Congress for alleged anti-party activities, announced on Monday his plan to launch a new political party. The groundwork for the new outfit will begin on January 12, National Youth Day, with the formal launch expected by the last week of March.
Moquim emphasised that his party will focus on nurturing young leaders, particularly from Odisha’s coastal districts. He hinted that while the party will be independent, its name may retain some reference to “Congress,” though final branding details are still under consultation with allies and astrologers.
The veteran leader claimed there is a growing demand in Odisha for a political alternative that is neither the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), nor the traditional Congress. He said he has already been approached by disgruntled leaders from various camps and a group of young doctors keen on public service, positioning the party as a homegrown solution to Odisha-specific issues.

Moquim also addressed questions about his daughter, Sofia Firdous, clarifying that she is free to pursue her own political path and that no formal discussions have been held regarding her joining the new venture. His remarks indicate a clear separation between his political ambitions and her career.
The January 12 event is expected to be a key indicator of the party’s potential as a “third force” in Odisha politics. Analysts suggest the success of Moquim’s initiative will largely depend on the support he can mobilise from disaffected leaders and young professionals seeking alternatives to the established political order.
As Odisha prepares for upcoming elections, Moquim’s announcement has already triggered speculation about shifting alliances, and political observers will be closely watching the developments in the coming months to gauge the impact of this new entrant.
