The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) on Thursday hit back at former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palaniswami following his comments on political alliances in the state. Palaniswami, speaking at a party event, had criticized certain alliance partners of the DMK, prompting a swift response from the ruling party.
DMK leaders accused Palaniswami of making “baseless and divisive remarks” aimed at undermining the stability of current political coalitions. “Such statements only serve to create confusion among the electorate,” said a senior DMK spokesperson, emphasizing that the party maintains strong, mutually respectful relationships with all its alliance partners.
The controversy comes ahead of key local elections, where both the DMK and AIADMK-led fronts are vying to consolidate their positions. Analysts suggest that Palaniswami’s comments may be part of a broader strategy to question the cohesiveness of DMK’s alliances, though the ruling party remains confident in its electoral prospects.

DMK leaders also highlighted their track record of collaborative governance with coalition partners, citing recent policy initiatives and public welfare programs executed jointly. The party stressed that such cooperation contrasts with what it termed “sporadic and opportunistic” alliances often formed by the opposition.
Political observers note that exchanges of this nature between DMK and AIADMK leaders are common during election seasons, reflecting both parties’ attempts to influence voter perceptions. While tensions are high, both sides have thus far avoided direct confrontations in public rallies, focusing instead on media statements and press briefings.
As the political landscape in Tamil Nadu evolves, such exchanges are likely to continue, underscoring the competitive dynamics between the state’s dominant parties. Analysts say that managing public messaging carefully will be key for both sides in the run-up to the elections.
