The Congress party sharply criticized the Indian government’s “indifference” to what it calls Israel’s “genocide” in Gaza, labeling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s silence as “disgraceful” and contrary to India’s historical stance. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, in a post on X, highlighted growing dissent within Israel, including from a former prime minister, against the escalating violence, which has killed over 58,000 Palestinians in 21 months, including 32 on Sunday alone, per local health officials.
Ramesh accused the government of prioritizing Modi’s ties with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu over addressing the crisis, stating, “The PM’s silence is shameful and goes against all that India has stood for.” The remarks follow recent Israeli strikes, including one killing six children at a Gaza water point, amid stalled talks between Israel and Hamas. Israel demands Hamas’s surrender and exile to end the war, while Hamas seeks a ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal in exchange for releasing around 50 hostages, 20 believed alive.
Congress’s condemnation echoes its June 24 statement, where it claimed Modi’s silence diminished India’s moral and political standing, a sentiment also reflected in public posts on X supporting Palestine. The party’s stance underscores a broader call for India to address the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
