The long-awaited expansion of the Karnataka Cabinet is likely to take place next week, with the ruling Congress expected to finalise the list of new ministers by Sunday night, party leaders said after a series of discussions with the central leadership in New Delhi. The expansion is expected to be followed by a swearing-in ceremony, likely on Monday, as the state government moves to fill pending ministerial berths. Congress leaders said the final list of ministers is being prepared after detailed discussions on maintaining a balance between different communities, regions, and sections within the party.

The exercise is expected to consider caste and religious representation, geographical balance, the inclusion of younger leaders, and demands from groups that feel underrepresented in the government. The Karnataka Cabinet expansion has been delayed for some time, with the Congress leadership holding multiple rounds of consultations to arrive at a formula acceptable to different factions within the party. Senior leaders have been involved in discussions to ensure that the expansion strengthens the government’s political position while addressing internal expectations among legislators.

Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president B.K. Hariprasad said the consultations were largely complete and that the party was now waiting for approval from the central leadership. “We have written the exam, and now we are waiting for the results,” Hariprasad, who is also a Member of the Legislative Council (MLC), told reporters after the discussions. The Congress leadership is also considering whether to keep a few ministerial positions vacant until after the completion of Gram Panchayat and other local body elections.

Party leaders are reportedly discussing whether retaining three or four vacant posts would provide greater flexibility in making future political adjustments based on electoral outcomes and organisational requirements. The expansion comes as the Congress government seeks to consolidate its position in Karnataka by balancing administrative responsibilities with political representation. The party has been under pressure from several legislators seeking ministerial opportunities, while leaders from various communities have also been demanding adequate representation in the state cabinet. The Congress government, led by Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, has already been focusing on implementing its electoral promises while managing internal expectations within the party.

Cabinet reshuffles and expansions often involve complex negotiations, particularly in states like Karnataka where caste equations, regional representation, and organisational balance play an important role in political decision-making. With the final list expected to be cleared soon, attention is now focused on which legislators will receive ministerial berths and how the Congress leadership manages competing claims. The expansion is likely to provide fresh representation to some leaders while reinforcing the party’s broader political strategy ahead of upcoming local elections and future electoral challenges.
