The Congress and the Goa Forward Party (GFP) have initiated preliminary discussions on reviving their alliance ahead of the 2027 Goa Assembly elections, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has indicated that it is open to joining hands with like-minded parties to challenge the ruling BJP. The early talks mark the beginning of political realignments as parties prepare for the next electoral contest in the state.

Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Girish Chodankar said he recently met GFP chief Vijai Sardesai in Fatorda, South Goa, to discuss the possibility of renewing the alliance that the two parties had formed for the 2022 Assembly elections. Describing the meeting as exploratory, Chodankar said no final decision had been taken and that further discussions would be held to work out issues, including seat-sharing arrangements.

The AAP has also begun internal consultations on a potential pre-poll alliance. Goa unit president Valmiki Naik met a party committee constituted to examine alliance options with other opposition parties. Speaking to reporters, Naik said the party was willing to collaborate with like-minded political groups, adding that its primary objective was to defeat the BJP government in the state.

The next elections to the 40-member Goa Assembly are expected to be held in February or March 2027. Political parties have started laying the groundwork well in advance, with alliance discussions likely to play a crucial role in shaping the opposition's strategy against the BJP, which has remained in power in the coastal state.

The BJP currently leads the Goa government with the support of 33 MLAs, including 28 legislators from the party, three Independents and two members of the Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP). Although the BJP won 20 seats in the 2022 Assembly elections, it later strengthened its position after eight Congress MLAs joined the party.

At present, the Congress has three MLAs in the Assembly, while the AAP has two legislators. The Goa Forward Party and the Revolutionary Goans Party each have one MLA. Last month, the BJP announced its goal of winning at least 30 seats in the 2027 Assembly elections as it seeks to retain power in Goa for a fourth consecutive term.
