The Congress party on Saturday criticised the Central government over the recent increase in petrol and diesel prices, alleging that the successive hikes are adding a growing financial burden on ordinary citizens at a time when inflationary pressures remain a concern across the economy.
In a post shared on social media platform X, the party claimed that fuel prices have risen sharply over the past several days, asserting that there has been a cumulative increase of around ₹5 per litre in the last nine days. It further stated that in the latest revision, petrol prices were raised by 94 paise per litre and diesel by 95 paise per litre, describing the trend as a continued escalation in fuel costs affecting daily commuters and transport-dependent sectors.
The Congress party used strong language in its criticism, alleging that the government was prioritising the interests of oil companies over public welfare. In its statement, the party argued that while several countries were reportedly taking measures to shield citizens from inflationary pressures, the Indian government was not doing enough to provide relief to consumers facing higher fuel expenses, which also indirectly impact the prices of essential goods and services.

The remarks came amid reports of another round of fuel price revisions across major metropolitan cities on Saturday. This marked the third increase in petrol and diesel rates in less than 10 days, highlighting a short-term upward trend in retail fuel pricing. The frequent revisions have drawn political attention, particularly as fuel prices remain a sensitive issue due to their direct impact on transportation costs and household budgets.
Fuel pricing in India is linked to international crude oil movements and broader global energy market dynamics, with daily revisions reflecting changes in benchmark prices and currency fluctuations. When global crude prices rise or the rupee weakens against the US dollar, domestic fuel rates often see upward adjustments, which can contribute to inflationary spillover effects across sectors such as logistics, agriculture, and retail distribution.
So far, there has been no immediate formal response from the Central government addressing the specific allegations made by the Congress party regarding the latest price hikes. The issue is likely to remain politically charged, as fuel pricing continues to be a key point of debate between the ruling establishment and opposition parties, particularly during periods of global market volatility and domestic inflation concerns.
