Union Home Minister Amit Shah expressed confidence that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will secure more than 90 seats in the upcoming Assam Assembly elections, signaling optimism for a third consecutive term in the state. Shah made the remarks as he began a two-day visit to the poll-bound state, which is set to vote on April 9, with counting scheduled for May 4.
Shah kicked off his visit with a massive roadshow in Guwahati, starting from Arya Vidyapeeth College field and passing through key city areas before concluding near Nepali Mandir. During the visit, he also attended a party meeting at the BJP’s state headquarters, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Bhawan, and is scheduled to participate in two Vijay Sankalp Samaroh programmes in Dhekiajuli and Tihu.
Speaking to reporters, Shah said, “The people of Assam are excited to bring the NDA government into power for a third consecutive term, and we will win over 90 seats in the upcoming assembly polls.” He emphasized that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the state has witnessed significant development, including world-class infrastructure projects and improved health and education facilities.

Shah highlighted the improvements in public safety and infrastructure, noting, “In Assam, extremism, bomb blasts, and firing have stopped. Health infrastructure is being developed here. The state has become the hub of health and education in the entire Northeast.” He added that the NDA’s governance has positioned Assam as a model state in the region.
In the outgoing Assembly, the BJP holds 64 seats, with its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL), and the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF)—holding nine, seven, and three seats, respectively. The opposition comprises the Congress with 26 MLAs, the All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) with 15, the CPI(M) with one, and one Independent legislator.
This election will be the first in Assam following the 2023 delimitation exercise, which redefined constituency boundaries. With polling set for April 9, major political parties have intensified campaigns across the state, aiming to reach voters ahead of a crucial vote that could shape Assam’s political landscape for the next five years.
