Mumbai has retained its position as India’s leading hub for valuable family businesses, with 119 companies from the city featuring in the 2026 Barclays Private Clients Hurun India Most Valuable Family Businesses List. The figure is 28 higher than the previous year, reinforcing Mumbai’s dominance among India’s major business centres. The city accounts for 95 companies in the main list, four more than last year, with Reliance Industries, backed by the Ambani family, leading the group. Mumbai also has 24 first-generation companies, led by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries.
The National Capital Region (NCR) ranks second, with 58 companies in the main list, four fewer than the previous year. HCL Technologies, associated with the Nadar family, is the leading company from the region. NCR also has 18 first-generation companies, led by Bharti Airtel, taking its combined presence across the two categories to 76 companies. While the gap with Mumbai remains substantial, NCR continues to be one of the country’s most important centres for large family-owned and first-generation businesses.
Kolkata occupies the third position with 26 companies in the main list, one more than last year, led by Shree Cement. Pune follows with 20 companies, down one from the previous year, with the Bajaj Group as its leading business. Chennai has 17 companies, while Bengaluru has 12, with Wipro leading the latter. Ahmedabad and Hyderabad each have nine companies in the main list, although both recorded a decline of one company compared with the previous year. Torrent Group leads Ahmedabad, while Dr Reddy’s Laboratories is the leading company from Hyderabad. Hyderabad, however, has 15 first-generation companies, while Ahmedabad has nine.

The list also highlights the expanding geographical spread of India’s business wealth. Vadodara and Ludhiana each have five companies in the main list, led by Inox India and Vardhman Textiles respectively. Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and Thrissur, despite not featuring among the top 10 headquarters cities in the main list, each have three first-generation companies. Endurance Technologies leads Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, while jewellery retailer Joyalukkas represents Thrissur. The distribution indicates that although Mumbai remains the country’s dominant family-business hub and NCR holds the second position, wealth creation is increasingly spreading beyond India’s traditional commercial centres.
