A Class 5 student’s quick thinking helped avert a potentially serious accident at a Government Higher Primary School in Narikombu, Dakshina Kannada district, Karnataka, after a mid-day meal worker’s finger became trapped in an electric grating machine. The incident took place on Wednesday while the Akshara Dasoha worker was operating the machine, according to education department officials. The worker reportedly cried out for help after her finger got caught, prompting students and others present on the school premises to rush towards the scene.

Class 5 student Manvith, who was playing on the school premises at the time, immediately responded to the worker’s cries. Officials said the boy understood the seriousness of the situation and rushed to the machine before switching off its power supply. His prompt action stopped the machine and prevented the worker from suffering further injury. The incident was subsequently brought to the attention of school authorities and education department officials, who praised the student for acting quickly in a potentially dangerous situation.

The School Development and Monitoring Committee president Ravi Anchan and its members commended Manvith for his presence of mind and courage. Akshara Dasoha Assistant Director Nonayya Naik and Cluster Resource Person Jyothi also visited the school and appreciated the student’s actions. Officials said his immediate response demonstrated awareness of the danger and helped protect the worker from a more serious injury.

Karnataka Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar also praised Manvith in a post on social media platform X, calling his action “truly heartwarming”. Shivakumar said the boy’s alertness and decision at a crucial moment had helped save the staff member’s finger and described his compassion, courage and presence of mind as qualities that could serve as an example to others. He congratulated the student and wished him a bright future, expressing hope that he would grow into a responsible citizen who responds to the needs of society and brings pride to the state.
