Assam Congress chief Gaurav Gogoi dismissed the importance of exit polls and expressed confidence that the Congress-led alliance would secure victory in the 2026 Assam Assembly election. With vote counting scheduled for Monday, Gogoi said the true mandate would be known only when ballots recorded in electronic voting machines are officially counted. His remarks came after multiple exit polls projected a return of the BJP-led government in the state.
Speaking in Guwahati, Gogoi said exit polls are mainly useful for television debates and should not be treated as the final verdict. He stressed that the Congress alliance is relying on the decision made by voters and remains optimistic about the outcome. According to him, the people of Assam have delivered their message through the democratic process rather than through survey projections.
The Congress leader also raised concerns regarding the handling and security of EVM strong rooms after polling concluded. He claimed that candidates from different constituencies had reported complaints related to procedures surrounding the machines. Gogoi said the party had documented these concerns and would present them before the appropriate authorities for review.

His comments echoed broader opposition concerns seen in other states during election periods, where parties have questioned the management of strong rooms before counting day. However, election officials have repeatedly maintained that standard security protocols are followed to protect the integrity of the voting process. No official irregularities had been confirmed at the time of his statement.
Gogoi further claimed that voters in Assam had chosen change and that the ruling BJP may have failed to recognise silent public sentiment. He said the electorate had strongly and quietly voted for transformation across the state. The statement reflects the Congress campaign’s effort to frame the election as a demand for political change after years of BJP rule.
Assam remains one of the most closely watched political battlegrounds of 2026, with the result expected to carry national significance. A Congress victory would mark a major opposition breakthrough, while a BJP win would reinforce its strength in the Northeast. Until counting begins, both sides continue to project confidence despite conflicting narratives around the likely outcome.
