When Air India Flight 171 crashed into a residential complex on June 12, killing 260 people, 8-month-old Dhyaansh became the tragedy’s youngest survivor—thanks to his mother’s unbelievable bravery. Manisha Kachhadiya, a homeopath, pulled her son from the fiery wreckage despite suffering 25% burns herself. But her heroism didn’t stop there: she donated her own skin to treat Dhyaansh’s severe 36% burns, giving him a fighting chance at life.
The crash struck BJ Medical College’s hostel, where Manisha and Dhyaansh were staying while her husband, Kapil, a urology student, worked at the nearby Civil Hospital. Trapped in their flat, the mother and son endured intense heat and flames. “She grabbed Dhyaansh and escaped, injured but unstoppable,” Kapil recalled.
Rushed to KD Hospital, the duo faced a grueling five-week battle. Dr. Rutvij Parikh, a plastic surgeon, used skin grafts—combining Manisha’s and Dhyaansh’s own skin—to heal the infant’s third-degree burns. “Infants have limited skin, so the mother’s donation was a game-changer,” Parikh explained. Manisha’s wounds were also grafted with her own skin, paving the way for both to recover.
