Chinese President Xi Jinping on Thursday called for stable and cooperative ties with the United States during a summit meeting with US President Donald Trump at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Addressing the gathering, Xi described the China-US relationship as the world’s most important bilateral partnership and urged both countries to ensure that tensions do not undermine global stability. His remarks came amid growing geopolitical uncertainty, trade tensions, and concerns over international security and economic cooperation between the world’s two largest economies.
Speaking during the summit, Xi said both nations must “make it work and never mess it up,” stressing that cooperation between Beijing and Washington benefits not only their own populations but also the wider international community. He stated that the relationship affects more than 1.7 billion people living in China and the United States, as well as billions of others around the world. Xi also emphasized that mutual respect was essential for maintaining steady progress in bilateral ties and warned that confrontation between the two powers would negatively impact global peace and prosperity.
The Chinese president framed the relationship as a choice between collaboration and conflict, arguing that both countries gain from cooperation and lose from rivalry. Xi said China and the United States should view each other as partners rather than adversaries while seeking common ground on issues affecting global governance, trade, and security. He further highlighted the rapidly changing international environment and described the world as increasingly turbulent, making coordination between major powers more important than ever before.

In one of the more symbolic moments of his speech, Xi linked China’s goal of achieving the “great rejuvenation of the Chinese nation” with Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. He suggested that both ambitions could coexist and even complement each other if the two countries worked together constructively. Xi stated that the Chinese and American people were both great nations capable of advancing global well-being through cooperation. His comments were interpreted by observers as an attempt to project optimism and reduce strategic mistrust between the two countries.
President Donald Trump also struck a conciliatory tone during the summit, describing US-China ties as “one of the most consequential relationships in world history.” Trump highlighted cultural and economic exchanges between the two countries, pointing to the popularity of basketball and American products in China while noting the widespread presence of Chinese restaurants across the United States. He remarked that a united relationship between Washington and Beijing could positively shape the future of the world and stressed the importance of maintaining open communication between the two governments.
During the meeting, Trump announced that Xi Jinping and Chinese First Lady Peng Liyuan would visit the White House on September 24 as part of a reciprocal diplomatic engagement. The invitation was presented as a step toward strengthening bilateral relations and sustaining dialogue between the two powers. The summit in Beijing is being closely watched internationally as both countries attempt to manage differences over trade, technology, regional security, and geopolitical influence while maintaining stability in a rapidly evolving global order.
