West Bengal has recorded an impressive 12% year-on-year growth in Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July 2025, reaching Rs 5,895 crore compared to Rs 5,257 crore in July 2024, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee announced on Monday, citing provisional figures from the Centre. The state’s cumulative GST growth for April–July 2025 stands at 7.71%, reflecting a steady rise in consumption and business activity.
In a post on X, Banerjee stated, “Glad to share that West Bengal has reported a robust 12% year-on-year growth in GST collections for July 2025, a sign of good economic health.” This performance outpaces peers like Jharkhand and Odisha, though cumulative post-settlement State GST (SGST) for the fiscal year shows a marginal 1% decline due to IGST apportionment variations. Pre-settlement SGST rose 5% to Rs 8,870 crore, up from Rs 8,466 crore last year.
The announcement counters opposition claims of economic decline, with Banerjee emphasizing fiscal discipline and welfare schemes like Lakshmir Bhandar and Kanyashree as drivers of economic dynamism. Despite challenges highlighted in NITI Aayog’s 2025 Fiscal Health Index, where West Bengal ranked 16th among 18 states due to high debt interest payments, the state’s 2024-25 budget reported a 6.8% GSDP growth, surpassing the national average.
