Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin on Monday inaugurated the newly modernized Ambattur Industrial Estate bus terminus, marking the completion of an ₹11.81-crore upgrade undertaken by the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) under the Vada Chennai Valarchi Thittam (North Chennai Development Plan). The facility, originally opened on April 10, 1967, had become inadequate for the growing commuter traffic in one of Chennai’s largest industrial hubs. Chief Minister M.K. Stalin had laid the foundation stone for the modernization project on March 14, 2024.
Spread across 1.63 acres, the redeveloped three-story terminus now features passenger-friendly amenities including air-conditioned waiting halls, a lactation room, modern toilets, drinking water facilities, lifts, ATM kiosks, 11 shops, a commercial complex, restaurants, and dedicated rest areas for bus drivers and conductors. The terminal can accommodate 20 buses across three bays and is equipped with digital display boards and improved lighting. During the event, Udhayanidhi Stalin also flagged off 51 new buses procured at a cost of ₹30 crore, further strengthening public transport connectivity in the Ambattur industrial corridor.
The upgrade is expected to benefit thousands of daily commuters, especially workers from the more than 2,500 small, medium, and large industries located in the Ambattur Industrial Estate, which collectively employ over two lakh people. Enhanced bus frequency and better infrastructure are likely to reduce dependence on private vehicles, ease traffic congestion on nearby corridors such as the Chennai-Tiruvallur High Road, and improve last-mile connectivity to the upcoming Chennai Metro Rail Phase II corridor stations at Ambattur Estate and TI Cycles.

The project reflects the Tamil Nadu government’s continued focus on modernizing urban transport infrastructure in industrial and suburban areas of Chennai’s northern suburbs. Similar upgrades are underway or planned for termini at Tambaram, KK Nagar, and Perambur under various state and CMDA schemes, with an emphasis on passenger comfort, women-friendly facilities, and seamless integration with metro and suburban rail networks.
