An Indian Air Force (IAF) AN-32 cargo aircraft crash at the Air Force Station in Jorhat on Saturday has left five personnel dead, triggering grief across several families as mothers and relatives mourned sons who had served in the armed forces. The exact cause of the accident has not yet been determined, and the Air Force has initiated an investigation to establish what led to the crash during landing operations.

Among those killed were Flight Lieutenant Shubham Kumar from Bihar’s Jehanabad district and Agniveervayu Danish Alam from Bhojpur. The tragedy has left their native villages in deep shock, with residents remembering them as dedicated young men who had fulfilled their dream of serving in the Indian Air Force.

Family members of Flight Lieutenant Kumar recalled their final interaction with him through a brief video call on Saturday morning. According to relatives, he appeared cheerful and spoke briefly from Banwariya village, mentioning that he was in a hurry and would talk in detail later. That call would later become their last conversation with him.

Kumar, the son of farmer Pappu Sharma, had joined the Indian Air Force after completing training at the National Defence Academy in 2017. His family shared that his wedding had been scheduled for November this year, adding another layer of grief to the tragedy as relatives and neighbours gathered to console the bereaved household.

He had recently visited his village in April to participate in his grandmother’s shraddh rituals before returning to duty just ten days prior to the accident. His sudden death has left his family and community devastated, with many struggling to come to terms with the loss of a young officer who was seen as fulfilling a long-held dream of serving the nation.

As investigations continue, Air Force officials have assured that a detailed inquiry will be conducted to determine the circumstances leading to the crash. Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for the personnel who lost their lives, with families holding onto memories of their final conversations and photographs as they mourn an irreplaceable loss.
