The Tamil Nadu government inaugurated the Marine Resource Foundation with a Rs 50 crore outlay to protect marine biodiversity and support coastal communities, as announced by Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, marking a first-of-its-kind initiative in India.
The foundation was launched in Chennai on September 9, 2025, following an announcement in the state budget earlier this year. Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu, along with Forests Minister R. S. Rajakannappan, emphasised its role in aiding marginalised coastal residents affected by climate change, sea erosion, and pollution. The foundation aims to conserve Tamil Nadu's rich marine life, including over 450 species, 117 coral reefs, and numerous whales and dolphins, while promoting sustainable livelihoods, ecotourism, environmental education, and research.
In addition to the foundation, Thangam Thennarasu unveiled the Manali-Ennore Restoration and Rejuvenation Council (MERRC), which integrates departments like the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board and Fisheries Department to safeguard the ecologically sensitive Manali-Ennore region. MERRC includes a 24x7 emergency centre for responding to events like cyclones and industrial accidents, with ongoing projects focused on livelihood improvement and environmental restoration.
