Pillows play an important role in sleep quality and neck support, yet they are often used for several years without being cleaned or replaced. While people usually devote considerable attention to choosing a mattress, the condition of the pillow supporting their head and neck each night can easily be overlooked.
Physician Dr Kunal Sood recently highlighted the issue in an Instagram post, explaining that pillows gradually collect substances left behind during sleep. These may include sweat, body oils and dead skin cells. Dust mites can also accumulate because they feed on dead skin, while their waste may trigger allergy symptoms in sensitive individuals.
An ageing pillow may also lose its original shape and firmness. As the filling flattens or becomes uneven, it may no longer keep the head, neck and spine comfortably aligned. This deterioration can contribute to disturbed sleep or morning discomfort, although persistent neck pain should be evaluated by a qualified healthcare professional.

Replacing a pillow every one to two years may help maintain cleanliness and support, though its lifespan depends on the material, quality and frequency of use. A pillow that has become lumpy, permanently flattened, stained or difficult to reshape may need replacement earlier. Waking regularly with stiffness can also indicate that it is no longer providing adequate support.
Regular maintenance can help keep a pillow hygienic between replacements. People should follow the manufacturer’s washing instructions because some pillows can be machine-washed, while others require spot cleaning or professional care. Using a washable pillow protector and cleaning pillowcases frequently can reduce the accumulation of sweat, oils, allergens and other residues.
The most suitable pillow depends on a person’s sleeping position, body type and comfort needs. Side sleepers may need greater height and firmness, while back or stomach sleepers may prefer a thinner option. Replacing a worn pillow is not a guaranteed treatment for sleep or neck problems, but it may improve comfort, reduce allergen exposure and support healthier sleeping posture.
