Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah has unleashed a scathing attack on the Central Government, demanding a clear timeline for restoring the region's statehood. Speaking at a packed public rally in Srinagar on Thursday, Omar questioned why the Centre keeps dodging the promise made in Parliament and the Supreme Court, urging them to stop hiding behind vague phrases like "appropriate time." He accused the administration of fearing accountability and clinging to unchecked power over the region’s fate.

The tension escalated after Lt Governor Manoj Sinha's recent remarks at the Union Territory Foundation Day event, insisting statehood would return "at the right moment" following delimitation and elections. Omar fired back, highlighting how nearly all 90 MLAs—from NC, Congress, BJP, PDP, and others—campaigned on the statehood pledge during the recent Assembly polls. "People voted for it, so why the endless wait? Tell us the exact parameters!" he demanded, jabbing at the Centre's reluctance to relinquish power and mocking their shifting goalposts after elections.

Omar's frustration peaked as he mocked the elusive "appropriate time" metric, asking rhetorically, "In which balance do we weigh it? With what scale?" As CM, he insisted he needs clear targets to address J&K's mounting crises—like arbitrary employee dismissals without trial and business shutdowns ordered by one person. He recalled his cabinet's first resolution post-October elections, sent directly to PM Modi, Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and other central leaders—yet zero progress or even acknowledgment has followed.

The CM also slammed security lapses, pointing to the deadly April 22 Pahalgam terror attack that killed 26 tourists and a local ponywala, devastating the tourism sector. "Taxis, shikaras, houseboats—everything's empty now. Who handles security? Not me!" Omar contrasted it with his previous six-year term as CM, proudly boasting zero instances of tourists being targeted. "You do your job; we'll do ours," he shot back at the LG, underscoring the Centre’s sole responsibility for law and order.

With J&K stuck as a Union Territory despite a fully elected government, Omar's bold call-out has ignited fresh debate across political lines. Will the Centre finally spill the beans on a concrete statehood timeline, or is this another round of political ping-pong that leaves the people of J&K in limbo?
