Rail services were disrupted after the engine of the Silchar–Guwahati Express derailed on the Badarpur Railway Bridge in Assam’s Lumding–Badarpur hill section. The incident occurred on Thursday morning, affecting train movement along an important railway corridor connecting the Barak Valley with other parts of the state and the Northeast. No casualties or injuries were reported, and all passengers were confirmed safe.
According to the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), the front trolley of the locomotive derailed between Badarpur and Sukritipur railway stations at around 8.50 am. The incident took place on the railway bridge over the Barak River. Following the derailment, the passenger coaches and the rear portion of the train were moved back to Badarpur, while railway personnel began work to restore normal operations.
The disruption affected several trains travelling through the hill section. The Guwahati–Silchar Express was cancelled, while other services were regulated or detained at different stations. Trains affected included the Sealdah–Silchar Express, Sairang–Kolkata Express, Agartala–Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express, Agartala–Sealdah Express and Kolkata–Sairang Express, causing delays for passengers travelling through the region.

The Silchar–Guwahati Express involved in the incident was also short-terminated at Badarpur, with its onward journey to Guwahati cancelled. Railway authorities took steps to manage train movement along the affected route and minimise further disruption. Passengers using the corridor faced inconvenience as services were adjusted while restoration work continued.
Senior railway officials were supervising efforts to clear the affected section and resume regular train operations. The restoration process was expected to take several hours, with the timing of the resumption of services dependent on the progress of work and the safety assessment of the track. Authorities had not reported any injuries among passengers or railway personnel.
The Lumding–Badarpur section is an important link for southern Assam and the wider Northeast, making disruptions along the route significant for passenger connectivity. Railway authorities advised travellers to check official announcements for the latest information on cancellations, delays and changes to train schedules before beginning their journeys. The cause of the derailment had not been established in the initial reports.
