An earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale struck Uttarkashi district in Uttarakhand on Saturday evening, October 10, triggering panic among residents who rushed out of their homes as tremors shook the area. According to the National Centre for Seismology (NCS), the earthquake occurred at 8:07 pm IST at a depth of 11 kilometres. No injuries or property damage had been reported at the time of publication, according to officials.
The NCS recorded the earthquake at latitude 30.744 degrees north and longitude 78.414 degrees east. Its epicentre was located approximately two kilometres northwest of Uttarkashi, close to the district headquarters. The relatively shallow depth meant the tremors could be felt in nearby areas, although the extent of shaking varied depending on local conditions. Authorities were monitoring the situation following the earthquake.
The tremors prompted people to leave their homes and move outdoors as a precaution. Officials from the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority said there were no immediate reports of damage or casualties. Initial assessments indicated that the earthquake had not caused any major disruption, although further monitoring remained important to establish whether any effects had gone unreported in nearby localities.

Saturday's earthquake was the second recorded in Uttarakhand that day. Earlier, at around 3:40 pm, a magnitude 2.8 earthquake struck Bageshwar district at a depth of five kilometres, according to the NCS. The two seismic events occurred several hours apart in different parts of the Himalayan state, which regularly experiences earthquakes because of its location in a seismically active region.
The latest tremor also came days after a stronger earthquake struck Chamoli district on October 6. That earthquake measured 4.9 in magnitude and was reported to have been felt in Delhi and neighbouring areas. The repeated seismic activity has drawn attention to earthquake preparedness across Uttarakhand, where mountainous terrain and vulnerable infrastructure can complicate emergency response. Officials have so far reported no damage from the Uttarkashi earthquake, while monitoring efforts remain important following such events.
