Hundreds of protestors, marking one year since the horrific rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar hospital, clashed with police at Santragachi in Howrah district on Saturday. The group, part of the 'Nabanna Chalo Abhiyan,' attempted to breach 10-ft-high iron barricades to reach West Bengal's state secretariat, Nabanna, demanding justice for the victim, referred to as Abhaya.
Chanting slogans and carrying the Tricolour, posters, and banners, the protestors expressed outrage over the lack of justice one year after the tragedy. Some used blunt instruments to break through the barricades, while others scaled the towering structures in defiance of police resistance. "They can fire at us, but we will reach Nabanna to demand answers from the government," one protestor declared.
Heavy police presence, including RAF personnel and water cannons, was deployed at strategic points to block the march. Despite a Calcutta High Court order to maintain law and order, tensions escalated as police urged restraint over loudspeakers. The victim's parents joined the protest at Dorina Crossing in Esplanade, urging citizens to participate, while BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, alongside MLAs, supported the cause without party symbols.

"The Mamata Banerjee government is rattled by this massive turnout," Adhikari stated, highlighting the swelling crowds at assembly points in Howrah and Kolkata. The victim's father accused the police of obstructing protestors by stopping vehicles en route, despite the court's approval for a peaceful rally.
The march underscores ongoing public anger over the unresolved case, with demands for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's resignation growing louder.
