Kolkata Police have summoned BJP MLA and former Indian cricketer Ashok Dinda for allegedly threatening and assaulting policemen during protests marking the first anniversary of the horrific RG Kar hospital rape and murder case. The summons, issued on Tuesday, requires Dinda to appear before New Market Police Station on August 17, according to a senior police officer.
The protests, held on August 9, coincided with a march to the West Bengal secretariat to commemorate the brutal rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in 2024.
During a rally on Saturday, Dinda allegedly threatened on-duty officers, provoked others to attack them, and assaulted a security guard assigned to an IAS officer. “We have seized video footage showing Dinda abusing and threatening our officers,” the officer told PTI, highlighting the evidence against the MLA.
The protests turned chaotic, with violence erupting across Kolkata and neighboring Howrah. Seven cases have been filed—five by Kolkata Police and two by Howrah Police—for obstructing security personnel, assaulting officers, and damaging public property. The unrest left the victim’s mother hospitalized with a head injury, underscoring the intensity of the public outrage.
