Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Thursday flagged off 917 modern waste collection vehicles as part of a new door-to-door waste collection and secondary transportation project in the West Delhi Municipal Corporation (MCD) area. The initiative aims to strengthen the city’s solid waste management system through the use of modern technology, improved infrastructure and more efficient sanitation services.

After launching the project, the Chief Minister interacted with Municipal Corporation of Delhi sanitation workers, commending their contribution to maintaining cleanliness in the capital. She also shared a meal with the workers and thanked them for their dedication and service. Delhi Ministers Ashish Sood and Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Mayor Pravesh Wahi, MCD Commissioner Sanjeev Khirwar and other officials attended the event.

Addressing the gathering, Gupta said the government’s objective extends beyond waste collection and focuses on creating a transparent, technology-driven and citizen-centric waste management system. She said the new initiative would improve the efficiency, accountability and timeliness of door-to-door garbage collection while contributing to a cleaner and healthier urban environment.

The project will initially cover around 4.5 lakh families across 25 wards in the West Delhi Municipal Corporation. According to officials, the first phase has been launched in six wards, while the remaining 19 wards will be brought under the new system by August 31 as part of the phased rollout.

To support the programme, authorities have deployed a fleet of 917 modern vehicles and waste collection equipment. The fleet includes 225 e-rickshaws for narrow lanes, 550 mini tippers, 52 compactors, 41 hook loaders, 28 Tata 407 vehicles, 10 dumpers, six bin-washing vehicles and more than 120 large-capacity waste bins. Officials said the upgraded infrastructure is expected to ensure timely and comprehensive household waste collection.

The Delhi government said the initiative forms part of its broader effort to modernise sanitation services and improve urban cleanliness. Officials expressed confidence that the combination of advanced technology, improved logistics and public participation would help transform Delhi into one of the country’s cleanest and best-managed capitals.
