In a major step to enhance passenger safety and reduce train delays, Indian Railways has formed a joint team comprising the Commercial, Operating, Mechanical, and Electrical departments. The initiative aims to proactively identify wagon-related issues, address mechanical failures, and ensure smooth and reliable train operations across the network.

Technical snags in wagon trains have often caused significant delays for passenger and freight services. Incidents such as damage to grease seals from tarpaulin covers, nylon ropes, or loose materials can result in mechanical failures, wagon detentions, and even safety hazards, prompting the need for preventive measures.

The joint team has clearly defined responsibilities and procedural actions for all departments at both loading and unloading points. Guidelines emphasize preventive care, such as securing tarpaulins properly and ensuring no loose materials remain post-loading, helping avoid avoidable technical snags before trains depart.

Officials highlighted that even minor faults can have cascading operational impacts. If a wagon develops a snag mid-section, all trains on that line are affected, forcing diversions or halts that lead to widespread delays. Monthly reporting on improperly secured tarpaulins and detention charges will now be monitored by senior railway authorities to maintain accountability.

Technological solutions are also being deployed to strengthen safety. Pilot projects using Artificial Intelligence for predictive maintenance, along with Online Monitoring of Rolling Stock (OMRS), Wheel Impact Load Detectors (WILD), and wayside Machine Vision-based Inspection Systems, are being trialed to detect faults and hanging components in real-time.

Additionally, the Railways has partnered with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation to introduce an Automatic Wheel Profile Measurement System, enabling non-contact monitoring of wheel geometry and wear. Combined with continuous safety upgrades, these steps are expected to improve operational reliability, passenger safety, and reduce delays caused by mechanical failures.
