A pregnant woman in severe labor pain was carried on a cot through a slushy, waterlogged road to reach an ambulance in Madhya Pradesh’s Bhind district on Monday, as heavy rainfall rendered the path to her home in Barokhri village unmotorable. The incident, captured in a viral social media video, highlighted the dire state of rural infrastructure during the monsoon.
The woman, Chanchal, a Dalit in her late 30s and wife of Angad Valmiki, faced distress in Lahar assembly constituency, 60 km from Bhind’s district headquarters. When her family called for an ambulance, it couldn’t navigate the inundated approach road. Four individuals then carried her on a cot through the muddy terrain to reach the vehicle, eyewitnesses reported.
District Panchayat CEO Sunil Dubey announced an inquiry to identify the department responsible for the road’s poor condition, promising action based on the findings. He noted that limited funds allocated to gram panchayats hinder rural development, exacerbating challenges during heavy rains. The incident has sparked outrage, drawing attention to the urgent need for improved infrastructure to ensure access to emergency services in remote areas.
