A Delhi Police sub-inspector has been widely praised after he prevented a man from dying by suicide on the Mahipalpur flyover, in a dramatic rescue that combined calm communication, tactical awareness, and swift physical intervention. According to police officials, the incident took place after the Police Control Room (PCR) received an emergency alert about a man standing dangerously close to the edge of the flyover. Responding without delay, a team led by Sub-Inspector Anil Sharma reached the location and found the individual in an extremely distressed state, appearing ready to jump onto the road below.
Officials said the situation was highly sensitive, requiring careful handling to avoid provoking panic or sudden movement. SI Sharma immediately assumed a negotiation posture, following standard crisis intervention protocols used in suicide prevention cases. He began speaking to the man in a calm and steady tone, attempting to establish emotional contact and prevent escalation. As the interaction continued, Sharma reportedly offered reassurance and tried to de-escalate the situation by encouraging the man to step away from the edge.
He also provided water and kept engaging him in conversation, ensuring that the individual did not feel cornered or threatened. Police personnel at the scene maintained a perimeter to prevent disruption while monitoring the situation closely. In a video that later circulated widely on social media, Sharma can be seen carefully continuing the dialogue, maintaining composure while assessing the right moment to act. Officials said the officer’s primary objective was to gain sufficient trust and reduce the immediate risk of a jump, while waiting for an opportunity to safely intervene.

The critical moment came when Sharma used a tactical distraction, handing over his mobile phone to the man under the pretext of an incoming call. As the distressed individual reached for the device, the officer reacted instantly, grabbing him with firm control and pulling him away from the edge of the flyover to safety. The action, though brief, was decisive in preventing a potentially fatal fall. Following the rescue, the man was safely brought down from the flyover and provided immediate assistance.
Police officials confirmed that he was taken into care for further support and assessment. Authorities have not disclosed his identity, citing privacy and sensitivity concerns. Delhi Police later issued a statement acknowledging the officer’s bravery and quick decision-making. The department said SI Anil Sharma demonstrated exceptional presence of mind, patience, and sensitivity in handling a high-risk situation, adding that his actions directly saved a life.
The incident has since drawn significant attention on social media, where users have widely praised the officer’s calm demeanour and courage. Many highlighted the importance of trained first responders in handling mental health emergencies and commended the professionalism displayed during the rescue operation. Officials said such incidents underline the growing need for crisis intervention training within policing systems, particularly in urban environments where high-stress situations involving vulnerable individuals are increasingly being reported.
