Prime Minister Narendra Modi marked a significant milestone in Kolkata’s urban development by inaugurating three new Metro stretches, including the state-of-the-art 6-km Jai Hind Biman Bandar-Noapara route, on Friday. The event, held amid enthusiastic crowds, underscored the government’s commitment to enhancing public transportation in West Bengal.
The Jai Hind Biman Bandar-Noapara line, connecting the city’s airport to key urban areas, is designed to ease commuter travel and boost connectivity to Kolkata’s Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, fostering both economic and social integration.
Following the inauguration, Modi boarded a Metro train at Jessore Road station for a 2-km ride to Jai Hind Biman Bandar station, accompanied by a group of excited schoolchildren. The Prime Minister engaged warmly with the students, sharing light-hearted moments, answering their questions about the Metro system, and posing for photographs that captured the celebratory mood.
The children, selected from local schools, expressed their thrill at meeting the Prime Minister and experiencing the new Metro line, which features modern amenities like air-conditioned coaches and advanced ticketing systems, aimed at providing a seamless travel experience.
The visit concluded with Modi touring the facilities at Jai Hind Biman Bandar station, where he inspected passenger amenities and infrastructure designed to handle high commuter traffic. He then returned to Jessore Road station, completing the round trip. The inauguration was attended by prominent figures, including West Bengal Governor CV Ananda Bose, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya, Union Minister Sukanta Majumdar, and Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari, highlighting the event’s significance.
The new Metro stretches are expected to reduce traffic congestion, promote sustainable urban mobility, and enhance Kolkata’s reputation as a modern, well-connected metropolis.
