Philippines President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. received a grand ceremonial welcome at Rashtrapati Bhavan on Tuesday, marking the start of a pivotal five-day state visit to India. Greeted by President Droupadi Murmu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Marcos, accompanied by First Lady Louise Araneta-Marcos and a high-level delegation, was honored with a Guard of Honour at the historic forecourt. The visit, Marcos’ first to India since taking office in 2022, aims to deepen bilateral ties between the two nations.
Marcos arrived in New Delhi on Monday evening and was promptly welcomed by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who held discussions with the visiting leader. On Tuesday, Marcos is set to engage in high-stakes talks with PM Modi, focusing on trade, defense, and maritime cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region. The agenda includes strengthening economic partnerships, with bilateral trade reaching $2.7 billion in 2024, and exploring new avenues in technology and renewable energy.
The visit builds on growing strategic alignment, with India and the Philippines sharing concerns over regional security amid tensions in the South China Sea. “This visit will elevate our partnership to new heights,” said a Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson, noting Marcos’ scheduled meetings with business leaders and diaspora groups. Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and other dignitaries also attended the ceremonial reception, signaling India’s high regard for the visit.
