The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) on Friday debunked media reports claiming a nationwide rollout of satellite-based tolling from May 1, 2025, stating no such decision has been finalized. The clarification addresses speculation that the system would replace the existing FASTag-based toll collection.
In a statement, MoRTH outlined plans for an advanced ‘Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)-FASTag-based barrier-less tolling system’ to be piloted at select toll plazas. This hybrid system integrates ANPR technology, which identifies vehicles via high-performance cameras reading number plates, with the current FASTag system using Radio-Frequency Identification (RFID) for seamless toll deduction.
The setup aims to ensure barrier-free movement, reduce travel time, and eliminate the need for vehicles to stop at toll booths.

Under the proposed system, tolls will be charged automatically based on vehicle identification. Non-compliant vehicles, such as those without valid FASTags, will receive e-notices, with penalties like FASTag suspension or VAHAN-related fines for non-payment.
MoRTH emphasized that the ANPR-FASTag system is a step toward modernizing toll collection, but a full shift to satellite-based tolling remains under consideration, with no confirmed timeline. Posts on X reflect public curiosity about the technology, with some praising its potential to ease congestion while others raise concerns about privacy and enforcement.
