On the eve of India’s Independence Day, the government announced 1,090 service medals for personnel from central and state police forces, recognizing their extraordinary courage and dedication. The Union Home Ministry revealed that 233 personnel will receive the Medal for Gallantry (GM), 99 will be honored with the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service (PSM), and 758 will be awarded the Medal for Meritorious Service (MSM), celebrating a wide range of heroic acts and exemplary service.
Among the gallantry awards, 152 medals were conferred on personnel for operations in Jammu and Kashmir, 54 for anti-Naxal efforts, three for duties in the Northeast, and 24 for other regions. Notably, four fire service personnel and one home guard and civil defence official also received gallantry medals for their bravery. These awards highlight acts of “rare conspicuous bravery” in saving lives, protecting property, preventing crime, or apprehending criminals, according to the ministry.
The PSM recognizes a distinguished record in service, while the MSM honors valuable contributions marked by resourcefulness and devotion to duty. This announcement, made annually on Independence Day and Republic Day, underscores the nation’s gratitude for the sacrifices and commitment of its police, fire, home guard, civil defence, and correctional services personnel.
