Kerala Chief Minister VD Satheesan on Thursday raised serious allegations, including suspected Goods and Services Tax (GST) fraud and irregularities in the selection of a private sponsor, in connection with the cancelled visit of the Lionel Messi-led Argentina national football team to the state. The proposed friendly match had generated considerable interest among football fans in Kerala before the event was called off. Satheesan said the allegations relate to decisions taken during the previous Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.

The Chief Minister said a preliminary inquiry report submitted by the state's sports department is currently being examined. He indicated that the findings raise issues that warrant closer scrutiny and that further investigation may be required to establish whether financial or procedural violations occurred. The allegations include concerns over the manner in which the private sponsor was selected and the financial arrangements associated with the proposed Argentina team event.

The Messi-led Argentina team's proposed Kerala appearance had attracted widespread attention because of the football star's enormous popularity in the state. The prospect of Messi and the world champions playing a friendly in Kerala had generated significant enthusiasm among supporters. However, the planned event was ultimately cancelled, leaving questions over the arrangements made by the organisers and the role played by the private sponsor involved in the proposed match.

The latest allegations have shifted the focus from the cancellation itself to the administrative and financial decisions surrounding the event. Satheesan has questioned whether proper procedures were followed in selecting the private sponsor under the previous LDF administration. The GST-related allegation could also bring scrutiny to the financial transactions and tax obligations associated with the proposed event, although the preliminary inquiry findings will need to be examined before any conclusions are reached.

The sports department's preliminary report is expected to provide the basis for further examination by the government. Satheesan said the report is being studied and that additional investigation may be necessary. Such a probe could examine the agreements involving the sponsor, financial commitments, tax-related matters and the process through which the event was planned and promoted.

The controversy comes after the cancellation of an event that had been expected to bring the Argentina national team to Kerala and potentially provide a major spectacle for football supporters in the state. The government has yet to establish any final findings of wrongdoing, and the allegations remain subject to investigation. Further action will depend on the examination of the sports department's report and the outcome of any additional inquiry ordered by the authorities.
