In an innovative attempt to curb public urination, the Mysuru City Corporation (MCC) has installed mirror-like stainless steel reflective panels along a compound wall near the city’s Central Bus Stand. Civic officials say the initiative is aimed at creating a psychological deterrent by making individuals visible to passersby while standing near the wall.
The project has been implemented along an 80-metre stretch of vacant compound wall that had reportedly become a frequent spot for public urination. Authorities fitted the area with polished stainless steel reflective panels designed to function like mirrors, making the location less anonymous and therefore discouraging misuse.
According to MCC officials, the reflective surface ensures that anyone approaching the wall can be clearly seen by pedestrians and motorists nearby. The corporation believes the visibility factor may encourage behavioural change without relying solely on penalties or enforcement action.

To ensure the system remains effective after sunset, LED lighting has also been installed around the reflective panels. Officials said the lights automatically switch on along with nearby streetlights, improving visibility during evening and nighttime hours when such violations are often more common.
The civic body stated that the project was completed at an estimated cost of ₹9.5 lakh. Officials have described it as the first initiative of its kind in Karnataka and said the idea emerged as part of broader efforts to improve urban sanitation and cleanliness in public spaces.
Authorities are expected to monitor the effectiveness of the intervention over the coming months. If successful, similar installations could be considered in other parts of Mysuru where public urination continues to be a recurring civic issue.
