The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), in partnership with Mumbai Customs, launched the Jewellery Hand Carriage Facilitation Centre at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) on July 16, 2025. This cutting-edge facility aims to revolutionize the export process for high-value gem and jewellery shipments, offering faster clearances, enhanced transparency, and streamlined logistics for exporters.
GJEPC Chairman Kirit Bhansali hailed the centre as a “milestone” for easing business operations, particularly for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) and high-value exports to Free Trade Agreement (FTA) nations like the UAE, Australia, and the UK. Mumbai, handling 65-70% of India’s gem and jewellery exports, stands to gain significantly from this initiative. The centre, now fully operational 24/7 and notified as a Customs area with Bharat Diamond Bourse as its custodian, promises to cut logistical bottlenecks.
Dnyaneshwar B Patil, Development Commissioner of SEEPZ-SEZ, emphasized that the facility’s proximity to the Santa Cruz Special Economic Zone, which contributes 13% to India’s gem exports, will expedite urgent shipments and enhance flexibility. The centre builds on the success of its first hand-carriage export in May 2025, valued at Rs 7.5 crore, marking a pivotal step toward positioning India as a global jewellery trade hub.
