A cargo truck operated by Bird Group's ground handling service collided with the wing of a parked Akasa Air Boeing 737-Max at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport on Monday morning, causing minor damage to the aircraft’s right winglet. The incident occurred shortly after flight QP-1736 landed from Bangalore, during the offloading of baggage and cargo.
Sources report that the truck driver misjudged the height of the aircraft’s wing, leading to the collision. No passengers or employees were harmed. Akasa Air confirmed that the aircraft is undergoing a thorough inspection to assess the damage and ensure safety. The airline is also investigating the incident with Bird Worldwide Flight Services, the third-party ground handler involved.
This mishap follows recent scrutiny of ground operations at Indian airports, with the Directorate General of Civil Aviation previously noting issues like vehicles lacking speed governors. The investigation aims to prevent future incidents and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
