The Lok Sabha is gearing up to revolutionize its attendance process for Members of Parliament (MPs) starting with the Monsoon session, set to run from July 21 to August 21. In a significant shift, MPs will now mark their presence directly at their allotted seats, moving away from the traditional lobby-based attendance system.
This change, driven by Speaker Om Birla, aims to streamline operations and reduce congestion in the lobbies, where MPs often gather to sign in. Sources indicate that the new system will save time and address instances where MPs mark their attendance but leave without engaging in House proceedings. To ease the transition, the existing lobby register will remain available temporarily, allowing MPs to adapt to the electronic seat-based system.
Last year, Birla introduced a paperless option, enabling MPs to use a digital pen on electronic tablets in the lobby. The new system builds on this push for modernization. Notably, Ministers and the Leader of Opposition are exempt from signing in.

MPs’ attendance is tied to their daily allowances during sessions, and their presence often sparks public debate. This innovative system is expected to enhance accountability and efficiency in the Lok Sabha’s operations.
