The Monsoon Session of Parliament in New Delhi was derailed on Tuesday, July 22, 2025, as opposition MPs from the INDIA bloc caused adjournments in both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha with protests over the Election Commission’s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter rolls in Bihar and demands for a discussion on Operation Sindoor. Waving placards and raising slogans, the opposition forced both houses to adjourn for the day, with proceedings set to resume at 11 AM on July 23.
Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju sharply criticized the opposition’s “double standards,” declaring, “They demand discussion but disrupt the House, wasting public money. We’re ready to discuss any issue permitted by the Speaker.” The protests centered on the Bihar voter list revision ahead of upcoming assembly polls and Operation Sindoor, a three-day military strike on Pakistani terror sites following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 people.
Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla intervened, urging opposition MPs to refrain from sloganeering and displaying placards, which he said undermined the House’s dignity. Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan called for order, while BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, chairing the session, requested written submissions to the Business Advisory Committee. Despite these pleas, the disruptions continued, leading to adjournments at 12 noon and 2 PM, and ultimately for the day. The Rajya Sabha witnessed similar chaos.
The session, starting July 21, has been repeatedly stalled by protests over Operation Sindoor, exposing deep political tensions.
