External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar launched a scathing attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in the Rajya Sabha, sarcastically dubbing him a “China-guru” who gained his China expertise from attending the 2008 Beijing Olympics and “private tuitions” with the Chinese Ambassador. Jaishankar, defending his recent China visit, emphasized he held no secret meetings, unlike “Olympic people” like Gandhi, who he claimed made covert deals.
Jaishankar criticized Gandhi’s advocacy of “Chindia,” a term coined by Congress’s Jairam Ramesh, and accused the UPA government of fostering China-Pakistan ties, including inviting Chinese investments and ignoring China’s occupation of Sri Lanka’s Hambantota port. “The China-guru lectures us, but this happened on their watch,” he said, dismissing Opposition claims of his leniency on China despite 41 years in foreign service, including as India’s longest-serving ambassador there.
Highlighting his transparent China discussions on terrorism, de-escalation, and trade restrictions, Jaishankar stressed India’s stance of mutual interest, sensitivity, and respect. He rebuked Gandhi for alleging a China-Pakistan axis, noting their cooperation began in the 1960s and grew under UPA, including when India “left PoK.” The minister’s remarks come amid Opposition accusations of his soft approach to China’s border transgressions, intensifying political tensions in Parliament.
