Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday launched a massive ₹5,400 crore development blitz in West Bengal, unveiling a series of transformative projects across the oil and gas, power, rail, and infrastructure sectors during a high-profile event in the industrial town of Durgapur.
Speaking to a packed gathering, Modi emphasized that the world is closely watching India’s rapid infrastructure transformation, calling it a crucial foundation for the country’s ambition to become a developed nation. Highlighting his government’s "One Nation, One Gas Grid" vision, he spotlighted the role of clean energy and regional connectivity in powering the nation's growth.
Among the headline initiatives was the launch of a major city gas distribution project by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) worth ₹1,950 crore in Bankura and Purulia districts. The project promises piped gas access to homes and industries, compressed natural gas (CNG) at fuel stations, and thousands of new job opportunities.

Adding further momentum to the Centre’s clean energy mission, Modi dedicated the Durgapur–Kolkata section of the Durgapur–Haldia Natural Gas Pipeline to the nation. Built at a cost of ₹1,190 crore under the Pradhan Mantri Urja Ganga initiative, the 132-km stretch will deliver a steady flow of clean energy to lakhs across Purba Bardhaman, Hooghly, and Nadia districts.
In another significant move, the Prime Minister inaugurated high-tech Flue Gas Desulphurisation (FGD) systems at two major power plants operated by the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC). With a combined investment of over ₹1,457 crore, these systems aim to drastically cut industrial emissions and improve air quality in the region.
Rounding off the mega rollout, Modi also flagged off the doubling of the crucial Purulia–Kotshila rail line, completed at a cost of more than ₹390 crore, further strengthening connectivity in the region.
With this sweeping package, the Centre is not only fast-tracking Bengal’s development but also sending a strong signal ahead of upcoming political battles — the road to 2026 is being built, quite literally.
