Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, J.P. Nadda, Kiren Rijiju, Piyush Goyal, and G. Kishan Reddy convened a strategic meeting at the Defence Minister’s residence on Thursday to prepare for the Monsoon Session of Parliament, set to begin July 21 and conclude August 21. The session, ahead of Sunday’s customary all-party meeting chaired by Rajnath Singh, is expected to be contentious as the opposition ramps up pressure on issues like the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar, the Pahalgam terror attack, and Operation Sindoor.
Sources indicate the ministers discussed the government’s stance on these issues, though no official agenda was disclosed. The opposition, including Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress, has criticized SIR as a BJP tactic to manipulate voter lists in Bihar and potentially other states, a claim the BJP and its allies refute, insisting SIR ensures only eligible voters participate in upcoming assembly polls.
The opposition also demands a debate on Operation Sindoor, India’s retaliatory strikes on terror camps in Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam attack that killed 26 civilians. They have seized on US President Donald Trump’s claims of mediating a ceasefire, which the government has denied, to question India’s sovereignty and push for a special parliamentary session. The government, however, hails Operation Sindoor as a success, with Rajnath Singh reporting over 100 terrorists killed in targeted strikes.

The meeting underscores the government’s efforts to counter the opposition’s narrative and maintain unity during the session, with the BJP emphasizing a strong, non-escalatory response to terrorism.
