Meghalaya is witnessing an intense phase of monsoon activity, with several districts receiving exceptionally heavy rainfall over the past 24 hours, raising concerns over flooding and landslides across the state. According to weather officials, rainfall has been widespread, with some locations recording extremely heavy precipitation. The situation has prompted authorities to issue advisories urging residents to remain alert as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist in the coming days.
The highest rainfall was recorded in Mawsynram, which received a staggering 526.4 mm of rain during the reporting period. Other parts of the state also experienced significant downpours, particularly in the Khasi Hills region. Sohra recorded 470.4 mm of rainfall, while Mawkyrwat registered 385 mm. Heavy rainfall was also reported from Mawphlang, Khliehriat, Shella and Williamnagar, highlighting the widespread impact of the active monsoon system.
Meteorological authorities stated that weather conditions remain highly favourable for continued rainfall across Meghalaya. Forecasts indicate that several districts, especially those in the Khasi and Jaintia Hills regions, could receive additional spells of heavy to very heavy rain over the next few days. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning are also likely in isolated areas, increasing the potential for weather-related disruptions and safety hazards.

The prolonged rainfall has significantly heightened the risk of landslides, flash floods and waterlogging in vulnerable locations. Steep hill slopes, low-lying settlements and areas near rivers and streams are considered particularly susceptible. Officials have advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall and to remain cautious in locations known for recurring landslide incidents during the monsoon season.
Disaster management and local administration teams are closely monitoring developments as saturated soil conditions and rising water levels increase the likelihood of localized flooding. Authorities have warned that transportation networks, including roads connecting remote areas, may face disruptions if heavy rainfall continues. Emergency response agencies remain on standby to address any weather-related incidents that may arise.
Experts attribute the ongoing weather conditions to a strong and active southwest monsoon system over Northeast India, supported by favorable atmospheric circulation over Assam and adjoining regions. With forecasts indicating no immediate weakening of the monsoon, residents have been urged to stay informed through official weather bulletins and follow precautionary measures as Meghalaya prepares for continued rainfall and associated risks.
