A fresh medical inquiry report has found alleged “gross negligence” by two private hospitals in Kanpur in the treatment of an Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) jawan’s mother, whose right hand was eventually amputated following reported delays in medical care. The revised probe concluded that critical lapses and delayed treatment significantly worsened the 56-year-old woman’s condition, ultimately leading to the loss of her hand. Police officials have said an FIR will be registered against the hospitals based on the findings of the inquiry.
The case gained widespread public attention after ITBP jawan Vikas Singh carried his mother’s amputated hand in a thermocol box to the office of the Kanpur Police Commissioner last week, demanding action against those responsible for the alleged negligence. The dramatic protest triggered outrage and intensified scrutiny of private healthcare practices in the city. Singh alleged that despite repeated visits and requests for urgent treatment, the hospitals failed to provide timely medical intervention, causing the infection and complications to worsen rapidly.
According to officials, an earlier inquiry conducted by Kanpur’s Chief Medical Officer was considered inconclusive because it did not clearly assign responsibility for the alleged lapses in treatment. Authorities later directed the panel to conduct a more detailed point-by-point examination of the case and submit a revised report identifying accountability. The fresh report reportedly highlighted procedural delays, inadequate emergency response, and failures in timely treatment as major factors contributing to the amputation.

The incident has reignited concerns over medical negligence and accountability in private healthcare institutions across the country. Legal experts note that hospitals can face criminal and civil action if negligence leading to serious injury is established through investigation. The case has also sparked public debate over patient rights, emergency medical standards, and the need for stricter oversight of healthcare facilities. Police officials said further action would proceed based on the inquiry findings and statements collected during the investigation.
